Stop if the door looks damaged
If the door hangs at an angle, has come off its tracks or has a damaged spring or cable, stop operating it and keep people clear. Do not attempt to adjust the lifting mechanism, force the door or release a damaged door from its opener.
Describe the symptom before trying a fix
- No response: note whether any opener lights or error codes are visible.
- Motor sound without movement: record the sound and door position; do not repeatedly cycle it.
- Stops or reverses: note where it stops and whether an object is in the doorway, without reaching into moving parts.
- Uneven movement or a loud bang: stop using the door and explain this when arranging assessment.
Identify the door and opener
Say whether you have a roller, sectional or up-and-over door, and whether it is manual or powered. The opener and the door may have different manufacturers. Record labels only if you can read them safely from ground level.
For owner checks such as a remote battery, follow the instructions for your exact model. Do not bypass a safety sensor, adjust spring tension or reset electrical protection repeatedly.
Questions for the engineer
Ask whether the business works on your door type and make, what the assessment charge covers and whether parts may require a second visit. Ask for a comparison of repair and replacement options, including labour, parts, any applicable VAT and disposal costs.
If the garage is unsecured or is your only access, say so. Confirm arrival arrangements and any temporary securing work directly with the attending business.
Before using the door again
Ask the engineer to demonstrate safe operation and explain the fault, fitted parts and maintenance instructions. Keep the invoice, part details and any warranty information. A general web guide cannot replace the instructions for your door or an on-site assessment.
